Suez Canal Traffic Resumption Welcomed by MOESNA
The Maritime Organization for Eastern, Southern, and Northern Africa (MOESNA) welcomes the recent decision by major global shipping companies to slowly resume some services through the Suez Canal and Red Sea routes.
This move follows signs of improved security and better operating conditions in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. As the situation stabilizes, ships can gradually return to the shorter Red Sea–Suez Canal route instead of using the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope.
Using the Suez Canal route will reduce travel time, fuel use, and overall operating costs for shipping lines. It will also improve shipping schedules and make trade more efficient and competitive for ports in Eastern, Southern, and Northern Africa. Faster and more reliable shipping services will benefit businesses, importers, exporters, and consumers across the region.
MOESNA commends shipping companies for taking a careful and well-coordinated approach in restoring these services. The organization notes that companies are continuing to apply strong security measures where needed to protect crews, vessels, and cargo.
MOESNA encourages continued cooperation between shipping lines, coastal countries, regional bodies, and international partners to ensure safe and secure maritime operations. Strong collaboration is essential to maintain stability and protect important sea routes.
The organization also reiterates its call for lasting peace and security along major international shipping lanes. These routes are vital for global trade and play a key role in supporting economic growth and development in Eastern, Southern, and Northern Africa.
